AH-1J and AH-1T Whisky versions are the principal attack helicopters of the Marine corps. They can be considered the most powerful of the Cobras hence the name Super Cobra. Delivery of the AH-1J began in April 1971 when the first four examples reached an activation cadre at New River, North Carolina. Within a couple of months, this formed the basis of Attack Helicopter Squadron HMA-269, the first of three similar units to be established within the Marine Corps. Mission’s undertaken included reconnaissance by fire, escort support of troop - carrying ’slick’ helicopters, suppression of landing zones prior to insertiti and interdiction of supply lines.
