The single-seat DH-2 bi-plane was Geoffrey de Havilland’s second design for the Aircraft Manufacturing Company and replaced his previous double-seat DH-1 in February of 1916.
This highly successful aircraft had the engine mounted behind the cockpit and the propeller pushed the aircraft. This allowed for the use of a forward-firing machine gun before the invention of the synchronous machine gun. At first the machine gun was mounted on a swivel but was soon converted to a fixed gun as pilots found it too hard to control the aircraft and swivel a machine gun at the same time.
