Without doubt the most important RAF bomber of the Second World War, the AVRO LANCASTER owed its existence almost entirely to the failure of the predecessor, the twin-engine Avro Manchester. Designed to meet an Air Ministry specification for a twin-engined medium bomber, the Manchester was plagued by severe problems with its Rolls-Royce Vulture engines that were never resolved, and production was quickly abandoned.
