The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was an aircraft of very mixed fortunes. Designed to be a long-range multi-seat escort fighter, in the Battle of Britain the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricanes and Spitfire.
An improved version - the Bf 110G (DB 605 engine) came into service by 1943 and was used mostly as a night fighter because they were no match for the Thunderbolts escorting American bombers over Berlin. Apart from its engines, the Bf 110G (last of the series) was similar to earlier variants.
