In 1968 the OH-58A Kiowa was chosen to satisfy an Army requirement for a light observation helicopter being based on the Model 206 Jet Ranger. Contracts for some 2,200 machines were subsequently placed, these differing from the commercially available Model 206A in having a larger diameter main rotor blade assembly, plus military standard avionics equipment and a few other minor alterations. Many of these are still in service today with US Army units around the world while others have been subjected to modernization.
