The Marine Corps operates the Boeing-built V/STOL AV-8 Harrier II ’Jump Jet’ in order to perform its prime mission of close air support. In 1984, the AV-8B Harrier II entered service and was designed to operate from primitive airstrips, clearings, and amphibious ships in support of Marines on the ground. It also has a limited air-to-air capability with its AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. The AV-8B participated extensively in the 1991 Gulf War, and was routinely deployed onboard amphibious assault ships.
